Equity and Citizenship Advocate

From "The ISTE Standards" (2018):

Leaders use technology to increase equity, inclusion, and digital citizenship practices.

3.1.a. Ensure all students have skilled teachers who actively use technology to meet student learning needs.

As a professional developer, I have encouraged teachers to use the SAMR model and TPACK framework to conceptualize and analyze their technology integration practices. Click below to view a presentation I delivered in 2018, and click here to access the Lumio presentation I created for a 2022 update of the same session (must have a Lumio account).

3.1.b. Ensure all students have access to the technology and connectivity necessary to participate in authentic and engaging learning opportunities.

One of my most impactful achievements has been to lead a comprehensive update of all technology in my school. I accomplished this by designing a 6-year technology refreshment plan and presenting it to the school board for approval. Through this plan, we have ensured that every device in the school at any given time is less than six years old, and thus, maximally able to serve students in their learning. 3.1.c. Model digital citizenship by critically evaluating online resources, engaging in civil discourse online, and using digital tools to contribute to positive social change.

I model digital citizenship in my own life by keeping a responsible balance between a positive balance between technology and social media use and other non-technology activities and hobbies that engage me, such as reading and exercising; monitoring my digital footprint via Google Alerts and being hyper-aware of my social media image; interacting respectfully with others online; and using media and information literacy to identify biases and vet sources before sharing.

3.1.d. Cultivate responsible online behavior, including the safe, ethical, and legal use of technology.

During the 2021-2022 school year, I joined the Common Sense School Cohort to begin the process of earning formal recognition as a school committed to digital citizenship. This process has led to partnership with our school guidance counselor and other teachers to implement digital citizenship activities at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
