From "The ISTE Standards" (2018):
Teachers inspire students to positively contribute and responsibly participate in the digital world.
2.3.a. Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community.
In the 2021-2022 school year and in conjunction with Bullying Prevention Month, 5th Grade students created a music video to raise awareness of bullying and cyberbullying. They scripted and filmed the project independently, and wrote and performed the song in collaboration with the vocal music teacher. Click below to view.
2.3.b. Establish a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency.
One of my favorite lessons to work through with my 8th Grade students each year is "This Just In" from the Common Sense Digital Citizenship curriculum. In this lesson, students critically evaluate numerous examples of information media, learn about the biases of the 24-hour news cycle, and reflect on the ways breaking news alerts play on their emotions to elicit engagement. Now more than ever, it is important that students are able to question the information they see in digital media. Through this lesson, my students are able to more clearly demonstrate these skills. 2.3.c. Mentor students in the safe, ethical, and legal practice with digital tools and protection of intellectual rights and property.
Created as part of the TE 878 course, this lesson plan was designed to reinforce students' mastery of Nebraska ELA standard LA 10.2.1.i: "Display academic honesty and integrity by avoiding plagiarism and/or overreliance on any one source and by following a standard format for citation." In this lesson, students practice the following learning targets:
-
Cite nonoriginal ideas and explain the importance of doing so.
-
Practice the writing skills of record-keeping, quotation, paraphrase, and summary.
By following conventions for the proper citation of sources, students are accomplishing two things simultaneously: they are responsibly exercising their own right of access to knowledge, and they are being good stewards of the intellectual property rights of others. 2.3.d. Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and protect student data privacy.
In the 2021-2022 school year, 5th Grade students created a public service announcement video to raise awareness about privacy and security concerns in a digital world. Groups researched, scripted, and filmed the project independently. Click below to view.
